For 9 years I’ve been telling aspiring home stagers that if you have natural talent to decorate or stage a home, you’ll know. While you can pick up techniques from courses or the Staging Diva Ultimate Design Guide, you are born with talent or you’re not. Your innate talent is a divine gift, it cannot be “taught.”
Telltale signs that you’re talented include:
- Sitting in a living room and knowing immediately that the couch is on the wrong wall. This is not an intellectual kind of “knowing”, it’s more of an instinct.
- A history of arranging and rearranging every room in your house even when everyone else thinks it’s already “perfect.”
- Walking into rooms wondering, “what were they thinking when they chose this color?”
- Friends and relatives who have been asking your decorating and color advice for years and saying things like, “You’re so talented, you should do this for a living.”
Which brings me to speaking houses
It turns out that “natural born home stagers and decorators” can also hear homes “speak” to them! I always thought it was just me, so I didn’t talk about it publicly. Then two long-time Staging Diva Graduates Leah Fritz and Donna Dazzo brought it up while commenting on a blog post I wrote about whether home stagers should set the table to sell a house.
This prompted me to write an article specifically on the topic of “hearing” what houses have to tell us about how they “want” to be decorated. I know you’ll enjoy the comments from both new and established home stagers!

If you’re wondering whether you have natural staging talent, I’ve prepared a free quiz for you.
You’ll get “before” photos of 10 rooms from my own clients. Then you’ll have a chance to compare your recommendations for improvement with what I advised during my own home staging consultations, plus what other home stagers would recommend!
